The longer days and warmer weather of the summer season offer many opportunities to create new memories with friends. Sara and I have written before about this treasured time of year when we can spend more time outdoors with friends, bringing us closer to nature and each other.
Whether it’s a leisurely walk through the neighborhood with a friend, dinner al fresco with a group of besties, or a weekend visit to a farmer’s market, these moments create lasting memories and strengthen our bonds. Here are a few reasons why outdoor adventures with friends are so important:
- Get Healthy Together: Spending time in nature is good for our physical and mental health. The Mayo Clinic wrote that, “Even for those without serious mental health conditions, nature may help you manage emotions like loneliness, irritability” Health research shows that time outside reduces cortisol levels (also called ‘the stress hormone’) and is shown to improve cognition and creativity. What may be surprising is the evidence that time outside can also improve relationships.
- Unplugging and Reconnecting: In our fast-paced digital world, spending time outdoors allows us to unplug from screens and reconnect with each other. According to a 2019 article in Healthline, “The natural world, on the other hand, can offer a mental and emotional refuge when you need to unwind and recharge.” Away from notifications and distractions, we engage in meaningful conversations, play games, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Even if just a walk on a nearby nature trail, the outdoors provides the perfect backdrop for genuine connections.
- Shared Wanders and Wonders: When we venture outdoors together, we can share unique experiences that make lasting memories. The pride of conquering a challenging trail, the laughter around table at your favorite cafe, or the awe of witnessing a breathtaking sunset—all of these moments become part of our collective story. These shared memories deepen our friendships and help form lasting relationships. Whether it’s a book club, a birthday, or simply “just because”, being surrounded by nature reminds us of the beauty of friendship and the magic of the outdoors.
So, throw on a pair of comfy shoes and head outside with friends. Fresh air, conversation, and shared experiences await. And with the July 4th holiday coming up this week, consider this great way to enjoy the day off!
In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. Trees can be contorted, bent in weird ways, and they’re still beautiful.
