Pursuing Happiness

When life gets busy, it can be hard to pause and find joy in the small things. It’s easy to assume that something new will bring us happiness, but as Sara wrote in an earlier post, more stuff doesn’t lead to happiness or fulfillment. And we’ve all experienced how the glow that comes from a long-wished for possession, or a promotion at work, wears off over time.

In honor of the International Day of Happiness on March 20th, established by the UN to recognize, “the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world,” we’d like to share some reflections on happiness from our favorite thinkers, artists, writers and one of my favorite baseball players.

Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.

Dalai Lama

Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.

Helen Keller

Happiness makes up in height for what it lacks in length.

Robert Frost

Happiness is good health and a bad memory.

Ingrid Bergman

The secret of happiness is to admire without desiring.

Carl Sandburg

You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren’t happy in one place, chances are you won’t be happy anyplace.

Ernie Banks
