October 7, 2023, was a devastating day, kicking off a protracted war in the Middle East, with 251 people taken captive by Hamas. People around the world have been praying for the safe return of the hostages and a resolution to the violent conflict.
The January 2025 cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas has led to the release of some of the hostages, among them, Naama Levy. Many in my community of Glenview have paid close attention to the hostage crisis, and to Naama’s plight in particular, as she had participated in Hands of Peace, a program started in Glenview that brought together teens from the United States, Israel and Palestine in dialogue to find common ground and connection.
Naama is a survivor, and she will need her community to help her transition back to life outside of captivity. In a public message she shared, “I am safe and protected, surrounded by family and friends, and feeling better by the day.”
Hope is like peace. It is not a gift from God. It is a gift only we can give one another.
Elie Wiesel
Naama’s plight reminds us of the importance of perseverance and the impact of collective support. We are hopeful that Naama Levy’s return brings a glimmer of hope to the many families still waiting for their loved ones to be released from captivity. It underscores the urgent need for continued efforts towards peace and the safe return of all hostages.
