🎉Birthday Season🎉

This week happened to be birthday season here at the Language of Friendship. All three of us on the editorial team had a birthday this past week! Even my dog Winnie turned 6 this week.

Some people don’t like making a big deal about birthdays. After all, everyone has them, and they happen every year. I think some people even find birthdays depressing because they mark the passage of time, and sometimes that stirs up emotions about unachieved goals or other disappointments. Or, they may worry about facing the prospect of getting older.

While all of that may have some validity, I actually think celebrating birthdays with friends is one of life’s greatest gifts. A birthday entitles you to one special day out of 365 just for you, so you might as well give it a positive association. A birthday is an ideal excuse to gather the people you want to be with and enjoy a festive time together.

As it turns out, most Americans seem to agree that birthdays are important to celebrate. Nearly 90% of the respondents to this survey indicated that celebrating birthdays of family, friends and loved ones is important. What’s more, about one-quarter of the people surveyed also reported feeling that celebrating birthdays is even more important now than it used to be. That survey was conducted before the Covid-19 pandemic, and I would bet the results would be even higher now.

In honor of our November birthdays, or birthdays any time, below are some quotes to get you on the birthday bandwagon. Cheers to more years!

Every birthday is a gift. Every day is a gift.

Aretha Franklin

There are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get un-birthday presents, and only one for presents, you know.

Lewis Carroll

Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.

John Lennon

The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.

Oprah Winfrey

We turn not older with years, but newer every day.

Emily Dickinson

Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you’ve got to start young.

Fred Astaire

Why party like it’s 1999 when you can party like it’s your birthday?

Prince
